Women TV hosts on Afghanistan’s leading TV channels at the behest of the Taliban. The presenters finally agreed to the Taliban’s order that female presenters cover their faces. The Taliban have been discriminating against women ever since they seized control of Afghanistan. Several anti-feminist orders were issued denying women education and access to parks.

Earlier this month, Afghanistan’s Supreme Leader Hibat al – Akhunzada issued a directive calling for women to wear the traditional burqa in public and cover their faces completely. The concerned ministry has directed the TV presenters to abide by the government order from Saturday. But the female presenters were broadcasting the show in violation of the order. The Taliban later issued a warning.

Sonia Niazi, presenter of Tolo News, told AFP that they were against covering their faces. However, Sonia said that the channel authorities had put pressure on her and told her that she would be fired if she came on screen without covering her face.

Previously, female actors were required to wear headscarves. Ministry spokesman Mohammed Akif Sadeq Mohajir said the authorities had no plans to fire women presenters. He said he was happy that the media channels had fulfilled this responsibility well.

Authorities also ordered the dismissal of women government employees for failing to comply with the new dress code. The terms also state that men will be fired if the wives or daughters of men working for the government do not comply with the law. Women presenters, channel managers and parents who do not comply with the order will have to pay a fine, officials said.

The burqa was mandatory during the Taliban rule from 1996 to 2001. The Taliban claimed that the blue burqa used by women during this period was the most desirable. In most parts of Afghanistan, women come out wearing headscarves.
