Taliban | The Taliban has demanded that women journalists cover their faces in Afghanistan

Kabul: The Taliban has asked all TV channels in the country to cover the faces of women presenters on TV channels broadcast from Afghanistan. The law was extended to TV channels within days of the suggestion that women should cover their faces in public.

However, a Taliban spokesman explained that this was not a law but a directive and that all channels had welcomed the proposal.

The Taliban have been discriminating against women since they seized control of Afghanistan. Several anti-feminist orders were issued, such as denying women education and banning them in parks.

Following the controversial decision, several journalists shared pictures of themselves covering their faces and reading the news on social media. But the Taliban insists there will be no reconsideration and that the order must be strictly adhered to.

Earlier in the day, it was ordered that women be allowed in public places in Afghanistan only to wear face masks. Violation of the order is punishable by imprisonment for the girl’s father or guardian and dismissal from government employment, if any. The burqa was mandatory during the Taliban rule from 1996 to 2001. The Taliban claimed that the blue burqa used by women during this period was the most desirable. In most parts of Afghanistan, women come out wearing religious headscarves.
