Gianmarco Tamberi not only put on a great show for hours at the World Athletics Championships in Budapest on Wednesday evening, but also impressed in terms of performance. The Tokyo Olympic champion from Italy won the high jump with 2.36 m in front of the Americans JuVaughn Harrison and Mutaz Essa Barshim from Qatar (2.33). In Japan, Tamberi and now three-time ex-world champion Barshim shared the gold honors. Faith Kipyegon ran to her third world title over 1,500 m.

The Kenyan won in 3:54.87 minutes ahead of Ethiopian Diribe Welteji (3:55.69) and Sifan Hassan from the Netherlands (3:56.00). For Hassan, the medal was cold consolation after her fall in the 10,000m gold sprint on Saturday. Moroccan Soufiane El Bakkali successfully defended his title over the 3,000 m obstacle course in 8:03.53 minutes.

In the women’s discus throw, there was a US double victory. The 25-year-old Lalauuga Tausaga had the throw of her life, she improved her personal record from 65.46 to 69.49 m and celebrated her first notable success. Silver went to Olympic champion Valarie Allman with 69.23, bronze to China’s Feng Bin with 68.20.

There was a change in the Wednesday program. Due to the great heat in Budapest with daily temperatures well over 30 degrees and high humidity, the women’s heats over 5,000 m were postponed to the evening.
