Vienna – When the Federal Army analyzed what it might (not) do last year, the so-called “Reconstruction Plan 2032” was created, with the help of which the largest gaps were to be closed within ten years. A year and two budget resolutions later, things are looking different once more: a gap that was still considered unrealistic to close in 2022 might be closed with the European Sky Shield Initiative – which promptly led to heated discussions in the National Council’s budget debate: Defense Minister Klaudia Tanner (ÖVP) made budgetary provisions for the Austrian participation in Sky Shield at fairly short notice in order to also enable long-range air defense (sometimes misleadingly referred to as long-range missiles).
