Target Wage Settlement: $2.2M Fine for Pay Disclosure Claims

Target Corporation has agreed to a $2.2 million settlement resolving allegations that the company violated Illinois law by failing to disclose wage ranges and other compensation details in job postings. The settlement, finalized earlier this month, impacts approximately 13,700 individuals who applied for positions at Target locations across the state.

The lawsuit, filed as a class action, alleged Target’s practice of not including salary information in job advertisements violated the Illinois Wage Transparency Act, which took effect on January 1, 2023. The law requires employers with 15 or more employees to publicly list the minimum and maximum salary for each job posting. Plaintiffs argued this lack of transparency hindered potential applicants’ ability to make informed decisions about pursuing employment opportunities.

According to court documents, the settlement fund will be distributed to class members based on the number of applications they submitted for positions at Target. Individual payments are estimated to average around $161, though the exact amount will vary. Claimants must submit proof of application to receive their share of the settlement.

This settlement follows a separate, $4.6 million agreement reached between Target and a group of New Jersey employees in February 2026. That case centered on claims that Target failed to adequately compensate workers for time spent walking within its stores while off the clock. The New Jersey settlement will distribute funds to approximately 13,700 current and former Target employees in that state, averaging approximately $336 per worker.

The New Jersey case highlighted a practice where Target allegedly did not include time spent walking between different areas of the store as part of compensable work hours. The settlement requires Target to revise its timekeeping practices to ensure employees are properly paid for all time worked, including walking time.

In addition to the New Jersey and Illinois settlements, Target has faced other wage-related legal challenges in recent years. A separate $2.225 million settlement was reached in a wage transparency class action lawsuit, though details regarding the scope and impact of that settlement remain limited.

Target has not publicly commented on the Illinois settlement beyond a brief statement acknowledging its commitment to compliance with all applicable laws. The company has also not responded to requests for comment regarding the broader implications of these settlements on its employment practices. The deadline to file a claim in the Illinois settlement is May 22, 2026.
