O Tata Group is about to close a deal to become the first fully local manufacturer of iPhones already India — after the Wistron agreed to sell a factory to the conglomerate.

Wistron’s board approved the sale of the factory to Tata for US$125 million. The unit in question operates an iPhone assembly plant near Bangalore, in the south of the country. India’s Deputy IT Minister, Rajeev Chandrasekharcommented on the negotiation:

The Prime Minister’s PLI scheme @narendramodi has already propelled India to become a reliable and important hub for manufacturing and exporting smartphones.
Now, in just two and a half years, the @TataCompanies will begin manufacturing iPhones in India for domestic and global markets.
Congratulations to the Tata team for taking over Wistron operations.
Required to @Wistron for his contributions and a great effort for Apple in building a global supply chain from India, with Indian companies at the helm.
O @GoI_MeitY fully supports the growth of Indian global electronics companies who in turn will support global electronics brands who want to make India their trusted manufacturing and talent partner and realize the Prime Minister’s goal of making India a global electronics powerhouse ???????? ????

Wistron was one of three Taiwanese iPhone makers in India, alongside Foxconn it’s yes Pegatron. However, the company’s lack of adaptation to the country and, in particular, the supplier’s inability to maintain any profit rate were the main factors for the venture’s downfall.

It is worth noting that the conglomerate had been in negotiations for more than a year to take control of the Wistron factory, while seeking to strengthen ties with Apple. In this sense, hiring was expanded at its factory in Hosur, near Bangalore, where components for iPhones are produced.

The Tata Group is also Apple’s likely partner in a promising push to open 100 authorized Apple resale stores in India — a venture that has not yet been confirmed, however.
