Taurine: The Elixir of Youth – Can It Really Improve Your Health and Extend Life Expectancy?

Taurine, an amino acid found in most energy drinks, could improve health, while extending life expectancy, according to a study published by Science on Friday.

Fifty-six scientists took part in the study by testing the ingredient on various animals. When they analyzed the impact of taurine on mice, they soon noticed the stark difference between a mouse on taurine and one without the supplement.

“The mouse that had a taurine supplement in the body looked healthier and younger, unlike the mouse that did not ingest it,” said Indian biologist specializing in molecular physiology Vijay Kumar Yadav, according to The Guardian media.

Apparently, mice that consumed taurine had denser bones, stronger muscles, better memory, and younger immune systems.

With research, scientists noticed that mice with taurine had a 10-12% higher life expectancy than those without. This equates to 3-4 months longer for a mouse and 7-8 years longer for a human.

The human, a much more complex being

“This isn’t the first time a study has shown something works in mice, but in humans it’s another matter. It’s much more complex,” comments Dr. Martin Juneau, cardiologist and director of prevention at the Montreal Heart Institute.

He also adds that in the study, the researchers administered very large doses to mice, which would not be possible in humans.

The only way to prove that taurine could extend life expectancy in humans would be to carry out a study on more than 4000 people for 5 to 6 years. “It is unlikely that this will be done, who will subsidize 50 million dollars?”, He adds.

The body already manufactures taurine. This amino acid is present in seafood or even meats.

For Dr. Juneau, human beings should not rush to taurine because of this study, especially if they do not have good lifestyle habits.
