That’s what it’s about

Pop star Taylor Swift played her second concert in Rio de Janeiro on Sunday.

On Friday, a young woman died after collapsing at the first concert. Because of the extreme heat, Swift postponed the concert on Saturday.

At the appearance two days after the death, Swift didn’t say a word about the deceased – as the pop icon had already announced.

Brazilian media report that Taylor Swift (33) did not speak about the audience member who died at the first concert during her second performance in Rio de Janeiro. Instead, she did what singers do: they express their feelings through music. As a surprise song, Taylor Swift included the song “Bigger than the whole sky” in her program.

Her fans interpreted this as a dedication to Ana. In video footage, Taylor Swift sits at a piano with her hair soaked in the rain. When she heard the refrain “Goodbye, goodbye, goodbye. “You were bigger than the whole sky” sings along, the whole stadium sings along.

But some fans would have expected more. «Wow, the show is over and Taylor hasn’t said anything about the deceased fan? Did she just ignore what happened?” asks someone on X (formerly Twitter). Or: “I perceived that as a great lack of empathy on your part, no consideration for the deceased fan.”

Taylor Swift dedicates a song to Ana

Shortly after Taylor Swift learned of the death of a concertgoer on Friday, she must have asked herself: What does this mean for my next two performances here? The pop icon was currently touring South America when a tragic death occurred at her first of three concerts in Rio de Janeiro.

It was 42.5 degrees, but fans still had to hand in their drinking water bottles at the stadium entrance. Then 23-year-old Ana Clara Benevides collapsed during her idol’s second song and later died in the hospital of a cardiovascular arrest.

Taylor Swift wrote on Instagram how heartbreaking she was at the news of her death. «I won’t be able to talk about it on stage. The sadness overwhelms me as soon as I try.” The next day the second concert was scheduled to take place in Rio, but the singer decided to postpone the performance due to the heat.

Two days after the death, Taylor Swift took the stage again on Sunday, and around 70,000 spectators came to the stadium again – but this time it was significantly cooler. According to weather services, the rain pushed temperatures down to 25 degrees. The last concert will take place under similar conditions on Monday evening. Taylor Swift then continues her tour in Brazil’s largest metropolis, São Paulo.
