[Teaching]AirPods automatically switch to noise reduction mode in seconds iOS 17 adds adaptability + dialogue perception

Recently, Apple announced an update in 2023 WWDC, bringing Adaptive Audio (“adaptive” function) to AirPods Pro 2. According to the environmental conditions of the user, it dynamically combines “active noise cancellation” and “transparency mode” and automatically adjusts , so that the majority of AirPods Pro 2 users can have a better experience. After the update, AirPods Pro 2 will use machine learning (Machine Learning) to control the playback volume and noise reduction of the headset when the user speaks, and then enhance the sound in front of the user, so that the user can communicate with other people without lowering the headset.

Although the Adaptive Audio function has not yet been officially launched, if you have AirPods Pro 2 and a MacOS device that can install xCode, and your iPhone has been upgraded to iOS 17 Developer Beta, you can follow the steps below to try the Adaptive Audio function first . Friends who are interested in trying the iOS 17 Developer Beta version but have not yet upgraded can refer to my previous teaching (link:

The editor has actually measured that after the “adaptive” function is turned on, the noise reduction ability will be lower, and the system will automatically adjust. This function seems to be temporarily sensitive to human voices. I and my colleagues have tested that when someone is talking next to me, the noise reduction function of AirPods Pro will drop. In addition, the editor tried to use speakers to play the voice of people speaking, simulating broadcasts in airports, train stations and other places. The editor found that after enabling the adaptive function, the user can still hear the broadcast clearly through the AirPods Pro.

In addition to the “Adaptive” function, this update also added the “Dialogue Awareness” function. Regardless of whether the user uses noise reduction or adaptation mode, if the “dialogue perception” function is turned on, the microphone of the AirPods Pro will sense whether the user is talking. If it senses that the user is talking, AirPods Pro will immediately switch to transparent mode, which is convenient for the user to talk face-to-face with other people. After the user stops talking for about 5 seconds, AirPods Pro will automatically switch back to the noise reduction mode selected by the user.

The editor first played music in the background, and then enabled the “adaptive” and “dialogue-aware” functions.

Then the editor talked with colleagues around me, and it can be seen that the system automatically switches to “transparent mode”.

After the editor stopped talking for about 5 seconds, the system automatically jumped back to the original noise reduction mode.
