Teatro alla Scala, coexistence between Meyer and Ortombina begins until August 2025

In the end, for the Teatro alla Scala the choice was a middle ground, between those (the Municipality of Milan above all) aiming to extend the contract of the current superintendent Dominique Meyer and those (the government) wanted to immediately impose the name of Fortunato Ortombina, coming from the Fenice of Venice. There will be both, until August 2025, in a sort of support. It was announced today by the mayor of Milan Giuseppe Sala himself, at the closing of the board of directors.

Ortombina will therefore be superintendent designated La Scala in Milan from September 2024, alongside the current number one Piermarini, Meyer, whose assignment was renewed until August 2025. «After a series of reflections and discussions with the government, the proposal that I brought to the board of directors today is the renewal of Meyer’s role until August 1, 2025», said the mayor of Milan, Giuseppe Sala, at the end of the board meeting board of directors of La Scala, of which he is president. «The board thus decides on a matter relating to our statute: as already happened when we designated Meyer, this renewal will have to be confirmed by the new board which will come into force in February 2025. In our statute there is a suspensive issue, but we are there already passed and I don’t think there will be any problems”, explained Sala, who has repeatedly explained the choice as the desire to ensure continuity to a very long theater programme.

As for the current superintendent of the La Fenice theater in Venice, «Ortombina will prepare in these months and Meyer will prepare everything to make his work easier. He will be formally designated from September 1, 2024″, said the mayor, highlighting that “the role of designated superintendent is an operational role, not a declaration of principle. Therefore it will also have to be operational in Milan. We also do this in agreement with Ortombina.”
