Javier Tebas once again pointed out Barça’s management problems on Monday. The La Liga president has confirmed that the Catalan club still have to reduce their wage bill to recruit during the next summer transfer window.
After struggling to register Gavi in La Liga, Barcelona finally succeeded thanks to a favorable court decision. But according to Javier Tebas, the Blaugrana club will have to seriously tighten their belts to recruit during the summer. On the sidelines of the presentation of the salary caps of the elite clubs, the boss of La Liga once again paid Barça this Monday in front of the press.
“Barça carried out non-recurring operations (the palancas, editor’s note) which enabled it to pay the expenses of this season, but not those of the next one, estimated the Spanish leader in remarks relayed by the Catalan press including Sports world. Either you increase your income or if you don’t increase it, you have to reduce your expenses by selling players. You can also do a mix of both options. They will have to reduce the wage bill by around 200 million euros.”
“More than 200 million are missing”
Also present alongside Javier Tebas, the general manager of La Liga Javier Gomez also called on Barça for a big austerity cure.
“The 470 million euros of expenses advanced by Mateu Alemany correspond to the cost of the first team. We must add the 108 million unregisterable players, the expenses, etc. With the information provided by Barcelona, we have an idea that must be confirmed by the club. You are going to have the center closed, you lose X, the president himself said 93 million euros. You have the cost of personnel, you have had 40 million TV rights that you do not have more, it must be taken into account that there are COVID losses that have not been taken into account, estimated this other La Liga leader […] Turns out he’s over 200 million short. And we no longer count Antoine Griezmann and Gerard Pique, that was already settled during the transfer window.”
A call from La Liga for Gavi
After the departures of Memphis Depay and Gerard Pique during the winter transfer window, Barça thought they could register Gavi thanks to the savings made. But La Liga decided otherwise and pushed the Catalan club to assert their rights in court. Despite the decision in favor of the Blaugrana entity in the first instance, the league chaired by Javier Tebas will not stop there.
“Next week we will file an appeal against the court decision which allowed Barcelona to register Gavi, even assured Javier Gomez on Monday. […] When Barcelona brought in the new contract from Gavi, they had to bring a cash flow plan and see how they would handle next season. Despite the departures of Memphis and Pique, it was not enough to register Gavi.”
