Technical note: severe acute hepatitis of unknown cause in children – PAHO/WHO

This technical note follows up on the reports disseminated by the Pan American Health Organization / World Health Organization on April 23, 2022 (two reports), April 25, 2022 and April 29, 2022.

The event was first reported on April 5, 2022 by the UK National Focal Point for International Health Regulations, which reported the occurrence of 10 cases of severe acute hepatitis of unknown aetiology in previously healthy young children (range age: 11 months to five years) in Scotland. To date, 348 probable cases have been reported in 21 countries, including 26 children who required liver transplantation. Fifteen countries have reported 5 or fewer cases.
