Technology in the health sector has brought changes ranging from treatment to patient care. One example is the use of electronic medical records. according to a article from the Journal of Scientific, Technological and Artistic Initiationthe traditional paper chart, when compared to the electronic one, has disadvantages due to the ease with which these documents are exposed to erasures, loss and lack of accessibility.
However, these resources also impact sustainability in clinics, offices and hospitals. according to one content of the Brazilian Chamber of Digital Economyin a case of use of electronic medical records with digital certification at the Cancer Institute of the State of São Paulo (ICESP), around 800,000 sheets were saved per month. Use that consequently vacated a fourth floor, previously used only for the storage of paper documents.
Additionally, one study from the Journal of the School of Nursing at USP showed that bond paper is among the most cited wasted materials in a university hospital, generating, together with other resources, a cost of around R$ 479,262.86.

In Brazil, data published in the blog Mobuss Construção show that the total annual waste with paper reaches 200 million sheets, a number that is equivalent to 400,000 reams and an approximate cost of R$ 4 million. In this sense, it is estimated that a ream of paper consumes 3.5 kg of carbon dioxide (CO²), totaling one 1,400 tons of annual wastean impact that led to a campaign entitled “Avoid waste of paper”, conceived by the Regional Labor Court of the 16th Region.
“The concern with sustainability is not something new, however, we are still far from reaching an ideal level in all sectors of the economy. adopt a system for clinics generates an impact, and it is a big step towards starting to transform this reality, in addition, of course, to the other benefits for the organization and management of the institution”, completes Richard.
With the technologies, more savings and improvements in the provision of services are expected, which also leads to a reduction in the time spent with bureaucracies, gains that can be felt by professionals, patients and the environment.
