Today, we are happy to announce the second edition of the Technopolice Festival which will take place from September 28 to October 1, 2023 in Marseille.
In a context of repression of popular movements, the use of surveillance technologies in public spaces is becoming normalized under the pretext of security, while police violence continues to increase in France. In view of the 2024 Olympic Games, a law legalizing algorithmic video surveillance (VSA) was adopted despite numerous oppositions (see in particular ici et ici), making France the first country in the European Union to legalize biometric surveillance of public spaces.
4 years ago, La Quadrature du Net, an association for the defense of digital freedoms, launched the Technopolice initiative with the support of around twenty associations, to identify and counter new police surveillance technologies in our cities. The Technopolice Marseille collective then began to organize locally with conferences, artistic exhibitions, camera mapping and street actions once morest the city’s surveillance system. In 2022, we organized the first edition of the Technopolice festival in Marseille and launched our collective complaint once morest video surveillance, mass carding and facial recognition by the State. For this second edition, we wish to denounce the role of these technologies, which give more power to an increasingly repressive police force,
Faced with the implementation of total surveillance of public space, it is urgent to resist and act for our desirable futures. Through films, debates and workshops, with free entry, this 2nd edition of the festival invites you to collective reflection.
