Teen Lifeguard Honored at White House After Trump Sees Viral Video of California Rescue

Trump Honors 16-Year-Old Lifeguard Ryder Williams and Rescued Boy at White House After Viral Video

A teenage California lifeguard and the young boy he pulled from treacherous surf were reunited Monday at the White House, where President Donald Trump hailed them both as heroes following a dramatic ocean rescue that captured global attention online. According to the Associated Press, 16-year-old Ryder Williams and the boy he rescued met with the president in the Oval Office to recount the harrowing July event.

“What you did was incredible, and everybody saw it,” Trump told the boys, according to ABC News. “When I first saw it, I said, ‘roll that back, I want to see that again.'”

The high-profile gathering brought the boys and their families together alongside Aaron Bohnen, a fellow lifeguard who assisted in the rescue. Footage of the July incident shows Williams clutching the boy as heavy, 8-to-10-foot waves repeatedly smash into them. At one point in the viral clip, both boys disappear underwater for several seconds before breaking back through the surf, with Williams maintaining his grip to haul the boy toward the shore.

Online videos of the struggle have been viewed millions of times worldwide. Reflecting on the moment, Williams explained that his primary focus was falling back on his professional preparation. “In those dangerous moments that we have, we always try to fall back on our training,” Williams said, as reported by AP News. “I really was thinking about how to get the boy out of the water as fast as I can.”

Wearing his black uniform, Williams shared his future ambitions with the president, noting that he hopes to train as a paramedic and pursue a career as a firefighter. Trump responded by suggesting that the young lifeguard might soon receive “some good recommendations.”

From Truth Social to the West Wing

The journey from the Pacific shoreline to the nation’s capital began last month when the dramatic rescue footage ricocheted across social media platforms. Trump joined millions of online viewers in sharing the video, writing on his Truth Social platform on July 28: “We’re going to bring this heroic young man, and his family, into the White House with, perhaps, the boy he saved, to give him a High Civilian Honor.”

During Monday’s visit, Trump marveled at the composure both children maintained during the crisis. Addressing the boy, who sat next to his father and sister on a pair of couches while Trump and Williams sat near the Oval Office fireplace, the president offered warm praise. “Your father is the happiest man in the world,” Trump said, adding that the boy handled the terrifying ordeal with remarkable poise. “The way [the boy] handled it was — he was cool, considering the problems.”

Trump also remarked on Williams’ “tremendous grace” under extreme pressure, admitting candidly during the meeting: “He’s a real hero. I don’t know if I’d do it. I wouldn’t probably. You’re lucky I wasn’t on the service that day.”

A Presidential Tour and Lasting Recognition

Beyond the formal Oval Office recognition, the visit included a special presidential invitation for the families to tour the historic Lincoln Bedroom.
