Tegen de Stroom by Dennis Heijn gets a series

Tegen de Stroom, Dennis Heijn’s debut novel, is being adapted into a series. Producer Millstreet Films has acquired the film rights to the book. Heijn’s book was published earlier this week. It is not yet known where the series will be shown.

In the book Against the Current, four activist friends in their thirties kidnap the teenage son of the CEO of an oil company. The foursome are trying to force the company to stop extracting fossil fuels. But when the kidnapping takes an unexpected turn, things spiral out of control.

Based on the book, a series is being developed in collaboration with screenwriter Karin van der Meer (Nieuwe Buren). Aniëlle Webster (Swanenburg) has been hired as director, reports Millstreet Films. The production house previously made the new Videoland series Máxima and the films ANNE+ and Soof 3.

“As the son of Gerrit Jan Heijn, Dennis is one of the few experts in the field of kidnapping cases,” says producer Rachel van Bommel. “He knows better than anyone else how to portray the position of the victim’s family in his book in an empathetic and authentic way.” Heijn is happy that the book is being made into a film. “It is a dream to see my story, which focuses on feelings of powerlessness once morest saving the climate, being made into a high-quality film.”
