With fraudulent automated callers, the goal is not always to get you to answer. Sometimes they want to get you to call them back. This is the intent of the “one ring” scam. Known as “Wangiri”, a Japanese word for “one touch and off”, it is a global threat that creates illegality of $1.82 billion in the industry, making it one of the top five frauds in telecommunication. It targets gullible victims by intentionally hanging up after one ring, hoping they’ll call back. If they do, the call will be charged at a premium rate, usually equivalent to an international call, even if the number looks local.
