Bluetooth headphones for 1 or 2 euros, a good deal? Not necessarily… If you know Temu, then you have probably already encountered one of these rock-bottom prices. But when we say to ourselves “it’s too good to be true”, this is often the case, and the Chinese sales app would apparently be no exception to the rule…
The application with its meteoric rise is, for example, the subject of suspicion in the French media. Among these, BFM TV for example, interviewed several experts on the subject, and the responses are not necessarily the most encouraging. But what exactly are Temu accused of?
First of all, quite predictably, one of the first criticisms made of Temu concerns the quality of the products themselves. We can of course point out the risk of counterfeiting, but also of non-compliance with European standards in force on many levels. This is what Damien Bancal, guest on BFM TV, explains.
But it doesn’t stop there, and there is another aspect of Temu’s very nature which is more frightening, especially since it is not only the French media who are worried about it, but also certain American specialists such as Grizzly Research, a firm which regularly attacks Chinese companies, and which was cited by the French expert.
This aspect is the possibility that there is spyware in the application. Just paranoid? Maybe not… Indeed, Temu is closely linked to another Chinese company: Pinduoduo. And Pinduoduo is an application known precisely for having integrated spyware.
If we nevertheless have no proof of this with regard to Temu, the fact remains that certain of the practices of the site and the app have something to reinforce suspicions… Like for example the fact that it is necessary, to register on Temu, provide your telephone number or email address…
However, given the success of the application and Temu’s particularly insistent strategy, there is little chance that these concerns will lead to a significant reduction in turnover. Not at least until there is definitive proof of the presence of spyware.
