Six months after canceling their tour amid controversy, musical duo Tenacious D has returned with a musical contribution to a cause close to their hearts: Los Angeles wildfire relief.
The 90-track album, Good Music to Lift Los Angeles, arrived on Bandcamp Friday, featuring a diverse range of artists including animal Collective, TV on the Radio, Jeff Tweedy from Wilco, R.E.M, and Tenacious D.
The duo’s contribution, a cover of REO Speedwagon’s “Keep on Loving You,” is a track frequently performed during their live concerts. While the recording date remains unclear, this marks their return to music creation following a hiatus sparked by comments made by Gass.
A Controversial Spark
tenacious D’s 2024 Australian tour faced a sudden halt following comments made by Kyle gass during a concert. Gass, celebrating his birthday, humorously wished, “Don’t miss Trump next time,” referencing the former president’s assassination attempt.
Gass’s remark sparked outrage, prompting backlash from conservative audiences and even lobbying efforts from Australian lawmakers for Gass’s deportation. Following this incident, Tenacious D canceled their australian leg of the tour, and a planned Rock the Vote tour in the US.
Jack Black, gass’s musical partner, condemned Gass’s statement, asserting, ”I was blindsided by what was said at the show on Sunday. I would never condone hate speech or encourage political violence in any form. After much reflection, I no longer feel it is appropriate to continue the Tenacious D tour, and all future creative plans are on hold.I am grateful to the fans for their support and understanding.”
Gass, also dropped by his talent agent, issued an apology via social media, calling his statement “highly inappropriate, risky and a terrible mistake,” before ultimately deleting the apology.
A Path Forward
Despite the turmoil, Black expressed optimism during the red carpet premiere for his movie Borderlands. He stated, “We need to take a break.Everybody needs a break sometime…These things take time sometimes… and we’ll be back when it feels right.”
A testament to his commitment, Black’s optimistic outlook materialized this Friday with the Tenacious D Instagram account’s return, announcing their participation in Good Music to Lift Los Angeles.
While the duo’s hiatus serves as a reminder of the profound impact words can have,Tenacious D’s participation in the wildfire benefit showcases the enduring strength of their musical bond and commitment to giving back to their community. Their story demonstrates the power of resilience and artistic expression in the face of adversity.
