Tenerife Wildfire: Uncontrolled Flames Threaten Northeastern Areas amidst Heatwave and Drought

2023-08-16 17:45:00

According to the local newspaper El Día, the fire is raging in the municipalities of Arafo, Candelaria, Santa Úrsula and La Victoria de Acentejo, in the northeast of the island. The flames are spreading further and further north.

The fire broke out in the Teide National Park, volcano and highest point of the island. The rugged terrain, with steep ravines, complicates the work of firefighters, who also use helicopters to extinguish the blaze, according to local media. Residents of the area have been brought to safety and several villages evacuated.

The Canary Islands, of which Tenerife is a part, have been hit by a heat wave for a week. The emergency services have warned that there is an increased risk of forest fires due to the drought.
