On Tuesday January 18 and Wednesday January 19, many households in Bordeaux and its left bank were deprived of the Internet. At issue: an incident on a bypass site that led to the section of ducts buried underground and containing fiber optic cables. The disturbances could not be completely resolved until Wednesday around noon.

It is a sheath containing 1,000 optical fibers which was accidentally severed by a subcontractor of the Interdepartmental Directorate of Atlantic Roads (Dira) operating on a section of the north-west of the ring road. Cables owned by SFR but part of which is rented by Free or Bouygues. If these last two operators were unable to estimate the number of their users affected by network cuts, SFR counted 15,000.

“This is an incident that we consider significant, specifies Altice-SFR. We dispatched 15 technicians to the site who worked outside all night to re-dig, iron a sheath and resolder all of the optical fibres. This Wednesday noon, all the welds were carried out and the incident is closed. »

Rumbles on Twitter

During the outage, a number of Internet users expressed their dissatisfaction on social networks, in particular Twitter, by calling on the customer services of the operators concerned. An Internet galley in which several town halls were also immersed, notably in Blanquefort, Eysines and Bruges.

“Since Tuesday it’s folkloric,” smiles Brigitte Terraza, the mayor of Bruges. Today, everything goes through the Internet, from simple e-mail to civil status registers. Fortunately, there is still 4G and connection sharing. But for all the visios that we have multiplied since the Covid, it is not enough. »

Altice-SFR management has indicated its willingness to take action against the company responsible for the incident. At stake in particular are the service guarantees promised to “key account” users, which are public or private companies.
