The utility scheduled the third trial retrieval of nuclear fuel debris from the plant’s No. 2 reactor for this autumn. The upcoming deployment addresses severe technical limitations encountered during initial extraction attempts.

Earlier retrieval operations relied on rigid, fishing rod-like mechanisms. Those legacy tools proved restrictive, yielding a microscopic 0.9 milligrams of debris per attempt. While those initial fragments provided essential analytical data regarding material hardness and radiation levels, they exposed the inadequacy of existing equipment for handling the estimated 880 tons of radioactive fuel debris remaining across the No. 1, No. 2, and No. 3 reactors.

Developed by the International Research Institute for Nuclear Decommissioning since 2017, the newly unveiled 72-foot robotic system offers an expanded operational radius inside the containment vessel. Fitted with cameras and interchangeable end-effectors, including a specialized brush to sweep and collect molten fuel fragments, the remote-controlled device successfully demonstrated its precision handling during a media demonstration in Naraha town.
