Since the band was founded in 2017 and an immediately following first EP, the Brazilians from Terraplana on their debut album Look Back worked towards delivering a veritable shoegaze talent test.

To get straight to the point: Terraplana doesn’t come up with any earth-shattering achievements for the genre in 28 minutes that are too short; the degree of original innovative spirit is very limited on a debut work. However, the band from Curitiba is competent enough to interpret the conscious nostalgia of its classic references as a virtue: the songwriting is successful, although even without any outstanding strokes of genius, the holistic atmosphere (and slightly exotic thanks to the engaging, mixed-gender, female-dominated singing) makes them feel intensified charisma), rather than filtering out individual individual passages from the eclectic epigoneism; the equally ethereal, blurry, richly imaginative and powerfully precise sound (of a clean, modern production that scales back the noise – a little too much? – and thus also overly intrusive My Bloody Valentine-Comparisons somewhat subverted) is ideal so that aesthetics and performance can interact harmoniously.

Vinícius Lourenço (vocals, guitar, synthesizer), Stephani Heuczuk (vocals, bass), Wendeu Silverio (drums) and Cassiano Vidal (vocals, guitar) make the amplifiers sizzle behind the indulgent dream pop, mostly dreaming at a slow pace, dozing longingly in between Departure and melancholic lethargy.
It’s especially great when… Conversations the gravity and thoughtfulness of The Cure understood (although Terraplana in the structurally open field around overly catchy melodies and precise hooks, just strolling non-committally), or songs like Memoirs, Different and the quiet elegy One Dream, One End venture further into post-rock and slowcore, and hint at where the future is for Terraplana for an actual greatness – even if one would perhaps trust a little more in one’s own instrumental abilities beyond the too uniform, at times colorless use of voices.
Nonetheless: Positioned without really getting to the point, but with a newcomer bonus that is justifiable in terms of scoring Look Back nevertheless a fine future stock in the shoegaze business.
