Terrible drama on the Tour de Suisse! Gino Mäder has passed away, his team Bahrain Victorious has announced. The 26-year-old St-Gallois had fallen on Thursday in the descent of the Albula towards the finish in La Punt and had to be resuscitated.

“Despite the efforts of the Chur hospital team”, where he had been transported on Thursday after being resuscitated, the climber “wasn’t able to complete his last and greatest challenge and at 11:30 a.m. we had to say goodbye to one of our team’s lights”wrote the Bahrain-Victorious team in a press release.

Gino Mäder, then 27th in the general classification, fell on Thursday afternoon at km 197 of the queen stage of the Swiss event, between Fiesch and La Punt, in the vertiginous descent of the Albula pass after an exhausting day marked by 3 ascents above 2000m altitude.

He had been found “inert in water” from a ravine below the road, “immediately resuscitated and then airlifted to Chur hospital”had indicated the organizers, specifying that “the seriousness of his injuries (had) not yet been established”.

But the next day “Gino lost his fight to recover from the serious injuries he had suffered”, Bahrain-Victorious explained. “Our entire team is devastated by this tragic accident, and our thoughts and prayers are with Gino’s family and loved ones at this incredibly difficult time.”.

The 6th stage between Chur and Oberwil-Lieli was “neutralized” after the death of Gino Mäder. “The peloton will start the last 30 kilometers; the race will be neutralized today, and all the riders will form a procession in tribute” to the 26-year-old runner “until the city arrived”, according to the official live of the event. The Bahrain Victorious team has also announced that it is withdrawing from the event.
