Good news for 4680 batteries
During the announcement of the financial results for the first quarter of 2024, Lars Moravy, head of engineering at Tesla, returned to the situation of the 4680 batteries as reported Electrek. He teaches us that ” production increased by 18 to 20% compared to Q4 2023, making it possible to meet the necessary demand for Cybertrucks, around 7 GWh per year“. The company plans to continue this growth, with the opening of additional production lines.

In other words, Tesla hopes that its 4680 batteries will be cheaper than NMC (nickel manganese cobalt) and NCA (nickel cobalt aluminum) batteries from LG, Panasonic and CATL which currently supply the car manufacturer for many electric car models.
Beware of Chinese LFP batteries
Very good news that would reduce the production costs, and thus perhaps the selling price, of some electric cars from the American manufacturer. But be careful, Lars Moravy took care to specify ” nickel cells“, to add aside read batteries LFP (lithium fer phosphate)which does without nickel and cobalt.
Reason ? They are much cheaper to produce than nickel-based cells, but in return offer lower energy density, and therefore lower autonomy.

In other words, we can expect a price drop on other Tesla models in the coming months thanks to the 4680 batteries But any price drop on the cheapest versions will not come from the 4680 batteries.
