9th grade at school? If you thought those were simple days then prove yourself against me in this geography quiz. I’m a ninth grade student in Berlin and I’m curious if you know everything that we (should) be learning in geography class.

Text and quiz by Florian Formen, Berlin student in the 9th grade

You know, of course, that Russia, Canada and Saudi Arabia have large oil reserves. Nor is it new to you that London, New York and Tokyo are major airport hubs. But which city has the most flight routes from and which country actually has the largest oil reserves? Is that not a problem for you either? Then you’ve come to the right place and can show in the quiz that your knowledge can easily keep up with a 9th grader like me.

Why does South Africa have 3 capitals?

In the student quiz, we wanted to know, among other things, which city is not the capital of South Africa. The solution is a bit tricky, because South Africa has three capitals with Cape Town, Pretoria and Bloemfontein. Cape Town is the seat of the legislative power, i.e. the seat of Parliament. In Pretoria is the management of the executive power – Pretoria is therefore the seat of government. The judiciary is directed from the third capital of South Africa, Bloemfontein. That’s why it’s there the South African Supreme Court.

Why does the American flag have 13 stripes?

The American flag has 13 stripes, 7 of which are red and 6 are white. There are also 50 white stars on the flag. The 50 stars represent the 50 current states and the 13 stripes represent the founding states of the United States. These are Virginia, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Maryland, Connecticut, North Carolina, South Carolina, Delaware, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania and Georgia. The color red in the flag stands for bravery and resilience. The white stripes represent purity and innocence, while the blue part represents vigilance and justice.
