Texans WR Jayden Higgins out for 2026 season with torn ACL

Houston Texans sophomore wide receiver Jayden Higgins will miss the entire 2026 NFL season after suffering a torn ACL during a joint practice with the Las Vegas Raiders on Tuesday. The blow derails a promising young target expected to take on an expanded offensive workload this year.

The injury occurred during a team drill in the red zone at the joint practice, where Higgins initially walked off under his own power before needing a cart to reach the facility. Subsequent medical evaluation confirmed the severity of the damage, abruptly halting the trajectory of a rising playmaker.

Jayden Higgins Rookie Impact and 2026 Projections

Selected by Houston in the second round at No. 34 overall out of Iowa State during the 2025 draft, Higgins carved out an immediate niche in his debut campaign. He appeared in all 17 games, making 10 starts while recording 41 catches for 525 yards and a team-high six touchdowns. He added another nine receptions for 98 yards across two postseason contests, proving dependable when called upon.

That productivity was expected to scale significantly this autumn. Stroud, functioning as a physical mismatch opposite Collins.

“He’s a dog. You see the work he’s been putting in, it’s showing up on the grass field. He has all the tools in the world. He’s going to be the face of this franchise at some point. His playmaking ability, his size, he has all the tools in the world. I can’t wait to see him rock out this year. It’s going to be exciting.”

Rebuilding the Depth Chart Behind Nico Collins

With Higgins sidelined for the campaign, head coach DeMeco Ryans and general manager Nick Caserio must recalibrate a passing attack that already carries notable injury history and uncertainty. The team’s active depth chart previously listed Higgins, Collins, and Xavier Hutchinson as starting wideouts. Replacing Higgins requires navigating multiple physical question marks elsewhere in the room.

The most prominent variable is Tank Dell, the dynamic third-round pick from 2023 who put up 1,376 yards and 10 touchdowns over his first two seasons before suffering a catastrophic knee injury—tearing his ACL, MCL, LCL, and meniscus alongside a dislocation—in late 2024. Dell missed all of 2025 and is being brought along cautiously.

Regarding his availability for the Sept. 13 season opener against the Buffalo Bills, Dell noted that We’re going to take it one step at a time.

Alternative Options and Roster Adjustments

Beyond Collins and Dell, Houston retains several internal candidates to absorb the missing snaps. Jaylin Noel, drafted in the third round out of Iowa State in 2025 alongside Higgins, caught 26 passes for 292 yards and two scores as a rookie. Noel returned to practice this week after dealing with finger and hamstring issues that sidelined him temporarily. Meanwhile, Xavier Hutchinson stands at 6-foot-3 and 210 pounds, offering a physical profile comparable to Higgins. Rookie sixth-round pick Lewis Bond has also drawn positive reviews during training camp workouts.

The timing compresses options if management looks outside the franchise. Recent weeks have seen veteran free agents like Keenan Allen, Deebo Samuel, and former Texan Stefon Diggs sign elsewhere, though names such as DeAndre Hopkins and Brandin Cooks remain available on the market.

Whether Caserio looks to the veteran wire or empowers the team’s remaining young pass-catchers will define Houston’s preparation over the remaining weeks of August.
