The media regulator, Arcom, formally reallocated this evening to the TF1 and M6 channels their frequency on digital terrestrial television (TNT) for a period of ten years, he announced at the end of a procedure launched in December. “Arcom today adopted the authorization decisions applicable to the TF1 services, on the one hand, and M6, on the other hand. These decisions, for a period of ten years, will come into force on May 6, 2023” , the regulator said in a statement.
At the start of the procedure, the billionaire Xavier Niel had applied to take over the frequency of M6, but his project had been dismissed on February 22, a week after the candidacy hearings.
TF1 and M6 therefore remained the only two candidates in the running. The authorizations to operate channels 1 and 6 of DTT expire on May 5, and their reattribution for ten years was the subject of a call for applications launched on December 7 last.
This procedure was a first since 1987, the year of the privatization of TF1 and the arrival of M6 on the sixth hertzian network: until now, these pioneers had benefited from a renewal without a call for applications and in return for commitments to of the regulator.
As part of the renewal of their frequency, TF1 and M6 have signed agreements with Arcom which “define their obligations and commitments”, recalls the regulator. “As such, each of the two channels will continue to offer its viewers a wide and diversified range of programs, giving a significant place to information”, underlines Arcom.
The agreements also include sections on “societal commitments” and “protection of the public”: “media, information and digital citizenship education”, “gender parity”, “diversity of French society” , “accessibility of programs for people with disabilities” or even “ecological transition”.
Finally, these agreements “confirm the major role of these channels in the financing and distribution of cinematographic, audiovisual and musical creation”, according to Arcom.
“Being accessible free of charge for all French people on a TNT frequency is essential for a group like ours”, reacted the president of TF1, Rodolphe Belmer, in a press release from the group.
