Thailand secured the top spot as the most-searched Asian destination among European travelers for the summer of 2026, according to accommodation search data released by digital travel platform Agoda. The peak booking period tracked April to June searches for July and August getaways, highlighting enduring European demand for Southeast Asian holiday hotspots.
Europeans are packing their bags, and Southeast Asia remains the undisputed favorite. For the second consecutive year, Thailand claims the crown in Agoda’s seasonal search metrics. But the broader picture of European wanderlust reveals shifting preferences across the continent and a growing appetite for diverse itineraries.
According to Agoda’s data, Indonesia climbed to second place, while Japan maintained a strong presence in third. Vietnam rose to fourth, and Malaysia rounded out the top five. These movements point to a travelers’ market that is gradually branching out beyond traditional capitals into wider archipelagos and coastal retreats.
At the city level, perennial favorites Bangkok and Bali captured the top two spots for the second year running. Koh Samui cemented its position at number three, Tokyo held fourth, and Pattaya rounded out the top five destinations for European summer travelers.
Shifting European Origins and Continental Spreads
The core source markets sending travelers eastward remain consistent from 2025 to 2026. France, Germany, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, and Spain continue to generate the highest volume of Asia-bound searches.
But there is a notable geographical expansion taking place across Europe.
Trkiye led all European origins with a striking 39% increase in searches for Asian destinations. Hungary followed with a 22% jump, and the Czech Republic saw a 16% rise. Central and Eastern European travelers are increasingly joining the Asia-bound wave, diversifying the demographic of long-haul tourists.
Andrew Smith, Senior Vice President, Supply at Agoda, noted the breadth of this growth. “What stands out in this year’s data is how broadly European interest in Asia has grown,” Smith said. “We’re seeing increasing travel appetite from Europe to Southeast Asia, Northeast Asia, and South Asia at the same time, pointing to expanded enthusiasm for the region.”
Fastest-Rising Markets in Asian Tourism
Beyond the traditional heavyweights, certain destinations are experiencing a surge in curiosity. Across the top 20 searched destinations, India recorded the most notable year-on-year growth in European searches at 14%. South Korea closely followed with a 13% increase, and Vietnam posted a 12% rise.
These figures underscore a macro-trend: travelers are looking for depth and diversity in their itineraries. Instead of sticking strictly to conventional urban hubs, tourists are exploring secondary cities, coastal ecosystems, and regional heritage sites.
