A Thales, a leading global technology and security provider, today announced the SafeNet IDPrime FIDO Bio Smart Card, a security key that enables strong multi-factor authentication (MFA) for the enterprise. This new contactless smart card allows users to quickly and securely access devices, applications and cloud services using a fingerprint instead of a password.

Credential theft, phishing and vulnerability exploitation are the top three methods used by attackers to access organizations, with 49% of all breaches involving credential theft. With these threats in mind, many organizations transitioning to the cloud are trying to combat the low adoption of multi-factor authentication (MFA), which is often touted as being too complicated.

The SafeNet IDPrime FIDO Bio Smart Card makes it easier for end users to adopt passwordless MFA by allowing them to easily enroll and authenticate using biometrics. Instead of using a password, users can log in with a fingerprint, using the card’s sensor. Smart cards also support contactless capabilities, allowing users to tap the card on any NFC-compatible device. For business users, this smart card offers several benefits, including greater speed, security and convenience than traditional passwords.

With these security keys, users can be sure they are protected from account theft and phishing on corporate devices. User biometrics are securely stored on the card’s chip and never leave the smart card, ensuring a high level of data privacy. This solution can be used on all digital assets that support the FIDO2 standard, including Windows, Mac, Linux, and more.

Thales is a market leader in biometrics, with proven success in contactless biometric payment cards for highly regulated sectors. The addition of the SafeNet IDPrime FIDO Bio Smart Card further strengthens its existing FIDO security key portfolio, providing enterprise customers with the same secure biometric capabilities.

According to Danny de Vreeze, vice president of identity and access management products at Thales: “The human factor continues to be a challenge in modern enterprises, with shifts to remote work and the cloud expanding the attack surfaces of many organizations. Adoption of MFA has been a common barrier to ensuring security, as many users find this feature cumbersome and choose not to use it. The SafeNet IDPrime FIDO Bio Smart Card helps solve this problem by introducing a physical form factor to strengthen security while providing a fast and fluid experience for users. Expanding on a robust portfolio of security keys and FIDO-supported solutions, this product is at the forefront of phishing-resistant authentication.”
