Argentina lived a long day of celebrations after regaining the missing FIFA World Cup title 36 years ago, and more than a million people gathered around the Oblisco Monument in the heart of the capital, Buenos Aires, awaiting the return of the champions from Qatar.
Argentina clinched its third World Cup title, and its first since 1986, by winning a penalty shootout 4-2 over France in the final at Lusail Stadium, on Sunday, after an exciting 3-3 draw within 120 minutes.
Argentine newspapers did not exaggerate their headlines after the nerve-racking match, as France returned the result twice, and it seemed that fatigue also affected them, such as the players and fans, so they did not search for exciting headlines, and contented themselves with highlighting the phrase “Argentina is the world champion” with pictures of Lionel Messi kissing or He holds the cup.
Clarin newspaper mentioned in its headlines, “A country’s joy. Argentina are world champions. Thank you, Messi,” while the newspaper (Olé) wrote on its cover, “We are the champions of the world,” and the (TYC) website used the same headline.
“Argentina wins the best final in history and rises to the sky,” said the newspaper (Lanación).
Messi was the hero of the celebrations after he scored two goals in the final and a penalty shootout, and won the best player award in the tournament after finally fulfilling his dream and making up for losing the 2014 final against Germany.
But Diego Maradona was also absent from the celebrations, as fans raised his pictures next to Messi, and local newspapers remembered the legend who died two years ago.
And (Clarin) published two similar pictures of Messi and Maradona while lifting the World Cup, carried on the necks, and commented, “The expected picture 36 years ago.”
And (LaNacion) added, “Maradona is always present with us, celebrating from the sky in Lusail.”
A number of former players agreed that the final match of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar was one of the best matches of all time.
Argentina star Lionel Messi scored twice, while Frenchman Kylian Mbappe gave his team three goals during the exciting 120-minute confrontation, before Gonzalo Montiel scored the decisive penalty kick, as his team won the title for the third time.
