Thanks to Maria for the good olive harvest

In the Spanish village of Casarabonela, the Fiesta de los Róndeles takes place the night before Saint Lucia’s Day. It is an act of thanksgiving to the Virgin Mary for the harvest brought in. The men dress traditionally and light their róndele – rolled mats of esparto grass that were used in the presses of the oil mills – at a campfire. They light the way when the statue of Mary is carried from the village to the Santiago Apóstol church. A choir follows, singing centuries-old Christmas carols from the village. Then residents return to the village square and enjoy hot chocolate, donuts and olive oil on toast.
