Actress Rani Mukherjee says ‘Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna’ is a movie that exposed many uncomfortable truths regarding Indian marriages. She also said that following the release of this film, the divorce rate has increased. Rani was speaking at a masterclass held as part of the 54th International Film Festival in Goa.

“After the release of Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna, divorces have increased. People who went to the theaters and watched the film were very upset. I think that was the feedback Karan (Johar) got for his film. I think the film opened a lot of people’s eyes and made them decide to be happy.”

“The beauty of Maya’s character is that she loves Rishi as a friend as well. What she finds in Shah Rukh’s character is the love she was always looking for,” said the actor regarding her character Maya.

“Rani said it’s very important to talk regarding a woman’s desires and her choices. Just because her husband doesn’t hit you doesn’t mean he’s ‘good in bed’ or that you’re in love with him. A woman should never be asked, ‘Are you attracted to this man?’ Otherwise it will not be allowed to do so.”

“In fact, Karan Johar dared to make such a film at a time when there was no certainty of what was going on. I think it’s important to stick with strong films and strong roles. In the history of Indian cinema, ‘Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna’ will be remembered as a film that was ahead of its time,” Rani continued.
