In this 2023-2024 football season, coaches’ contracts are the center of attention, and the salary figures are sometimes surprising. As for former Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard, who has just signed a contract extension with Al-Ettifaq in Saudi Arabia, despite a complicated start to his mandate.
Steven Gerrard the only one in the top 11 who does not coach in Europe
Gerrard, 43, took charge of the team following his dismissal from Aston Villa and endured a difficult start in the Middle East. Currently eighth in the Saudi Pro League and without a win since October, the English coach has faced departure rumors, especially as star Jordan Henderson recently left the club for Ajax.
However, Al-Ettifaq decided to support his manager by offering him a two-year contract extension, keeping him in charge of the team until 2027. This new contract, worth 17.8 million euros per year, places Gerrard just below the salary of Jürgen Klopp, the current Liverpool manager, who receives 18.8 million euros per year according to figures from The Sun. Klopp, meanwhile, has announced that he will leave the club at the end of the current season.
No French or Ligue 1 club in the ranking
Globally, Gerrard ranks fourth among the highest paid coaches. Atletico Madrid’s Diego Simeone takes the top spot with an annual salary of €35 million, followed by Manchester City’s Pep Guardiola with €23.5 million per year. No French coach is ranked in the 11, nor any who plays in the Ligue 1 championship.
