In the northeast of Sardinia, off the Costa Smeralda, the archipelago of La Maddalena can boast of offering one of the clearest waters in the Mediterranean. This collection of small islets, with their heavenly coves, turquoise water and white sand, is the best alternative to the more touristy islands of Italy – here, in places, you would swear you were treading on an unexplored Eden. Lounging on some of Europe’s finest beaches will require renting a boat, but believe us: the ethereal pink sand of Spiaggia Rosa, or that of Cala Coticcio, dubbed “Italian Tahiti” by locals, are well worth it.
