Over the past 40 years, cases of diabetes and obesity have exploded around the world. Our lifestyle and in particular our diet are today responsible for 70% of new diagnoses of type 2 diabetes. A study looked at the evolution of eating habits in 184 countries during this period of time. She was able to pinpoint the factors most responsible for the increase in cases of type 2 diabetes.

Type 2 diabetes is characterized by resistance of the body’s cells to insulin. This hormone produced by the pancreas is responsible for regulating the level of carbohydrates in the blood. Between 1990 and 2018, the number of cases literally exploded all over the world.

Today (2018 figures), researchers at the Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy at Tufts University estimate that 7 out of 10 type 2 diabetes diagnoses (in 2018) are linked to the sufferers’ diet. That is 14.1 million new cases for the year 2018. They were able to identify which foods had the greatest impact on the appearance of the disease.

Of the 11 dietary factors considered, three have contributed significantly to the increase in the global incidence of type 2 diabetes:

  • Insufficient consumption of whole grains,
  • Excessive consumption of refined cereals: white flour, white rice, white pasta, etc.
  • Overconsumption of processed meats and unprocessed red meats: on average, in all countries included in the study, people consume an average of 56.5 g of meat per day. However, the optimal intake would be 14.3 g per day.

Other factors had less impact on new cases of illness. To know :

  • insufficient intake of yogurt
  • insufficient intake of fruits, vegetables, nuts or seeds

Poor quality carbohydrates

“Our study suggests that poor carbohydrate quality is one of the leading diet-attributable drivers of type 2 diabetes worldwide, with significant variation across countries and over time,” says the lead author. , Professor Dariush Mozaffarian. “These new findings reveal critical areas for national and global focus to improve nutrition and reduce the devastating burden of diabetes.”

Who is the population most affected by these observations?

The analysis found that poor diet accounts for a greater proportion of total type 2 diabetes incidence in men than in women, in younger adults compared to older adults, and among urban residents compared to rural residents globally.

Europe (Central and Eastern) and Central Asia, particularly Poland and Russia, where diets are generally high in red meat, processed meat and potatoes, have recorded the highest number of cases of type 2 diabetes linked to diet. Incidence was also high in Latin America and the Caribbean, particularly in Colombia and Mexico, due to high consumption of sugary drinks, processed meat and low consumption of whole grains.
