The actors of psychiatry mobilized around the EPSM of Sarthe

In a press release, the actors of psychiatry express their support for the EPSM of Sarthe, in great difficulty to ensure the continuity of care, in connection in particular with the lack of hospital practitioners. More generally, they ask for an “emergency plan” for psychiatry.

Symptomatic of the situation of public psychiatry in many territories, the situation of the EPSM of Le Mans can only alert us. However, this is not new, the doctors of the establishment having expressed the difficult situation they have been experiencing since the fall of 2021.

Despite the mobilization of caregivers and management, the establishment is today in a situation of fragility affecting its attractiveness with almost 40% of vacancies for hospital practitioners. At the end of July, a total of 42 psychiatric beds were closed for lack of a doctor to ensure continuity of care.

The establishment was forced to prioritize care without consent, thus delaying access to care for patients requiring free care, the medical shortage also aggravated the situation of outpatient care with delays in access to care extending by disproportionate way.

The care pathway for patients taken care of by practitioners and multidisciplinary emergency teams in Sarthe health establishments has become problematic. These services are completely embolized with very long waiting times for a bed to become available in a psychiatric unit.

Even if, under the aegis of the ARS, the solidarity of the other establishments in the region has been put in place and has materialized through a regional psychiatry scheduling unit, it cannot solve the problems that the other establishments in the region are also experiencing medical demography difficulties in various ways. Moreover, we cannot be satisfied with a situation that results in hospitalizing patients at the other end of the region, thus depriving them of the support of those around them.

We cannot leave either the local actors or our fellow citizens in this extreme situation and ask that under the aegis of the DGOS the modalities of an external intervention be defined in order to support and determine in collaboration with the ESPM the Sarthe, the establishments of the region and the ARS long-lasting and effective measures to strengthen the Sarthe medical teams and guarantee equal access to psychiatric care. Many establishments experiencing or risking experiencing similar difficulties, this support should be part of a psychiatric emergency plan drawn up with all the players.
