A historic turning point in Chinese shipbuilding. China, a late entrant into the cruise sector, marks a decisive turning point with the delivery of the first large cruise ship built to international standards and classified by LR (Lloyd’s Register). Baptized Adora Magic Citythis giant of the seas, with a capacity of 5,246 passengersis the result of a collaboration between the Carnival Group and the China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC). Designed by JVPC, a joint venture between CSSC and Fincantieri, this ambitious project, initially named AIDA Asia, symbolizes the advent of China in the design and construction of cruises.

A crew of 1,292 people and one delivery of the vessel to December 15followed by a running-in cruise intended for crew training and promotion to travel agents to allow them to test the ship.

The impact on the cruise market

The launch of this ship is seen as a catalyst for the cruise market in China. On the one hand, it meets the demand of wealthy Chinese tourists for short-term cruises (four to five days). On the other hand, it sets a new standard with more spacious cabins, superior quality layout and international components, including cabins designed by Fincantieri.

A paradigm shift in shipbuilding

This project could encourage major global players in shipbuilding, accustomed to specialized shipyards in Italy, France, Germany and Finland, to closely observe developments in China. According to Marco Scopaz, project manager at LR, this transition to China is inevitable and could redefine the global cruise market.

The key role of LR and technological advances

LR, with the largest number of cruise ships under its classification, plays a crucial role in this project. The Adora Magic City incorporates advanced technologies, such as a diesel-electric system with five ABB diesel generators and two Azipod XO 2100 units. Additionally, fire-fighting systems and rescue devices were provided by international companies.

Towards a local supply chain

Scopaz highlights the opportunity for China to develop its own supply chain in the cruise sector, with engineering companies, equipment suppliers and interior design and decoration specialists located close to shipyards .

A new era for cruises in China

The Adora Magic City is not just a ship, but the symbol of a new era for China’s cruise industry. With this achievement, China positions itself as a key and innovative player, ready to redefine the standards of the cruise industry on a global scale.
