The Ageless Stars: Harrison Ford (80) and Tom Cruise (60) Dominate the Expensive Blockbusters – Is the Star System Outdated?

Harrison Ford (80) and Tom Cruise (60) lead the most expensive blockbusters today: Has commercial cinema long been a retirement home? Or is the star system itself outdated? A search for clues.

At 80, that’s when life begins! Or at least it goes on, unchecked and with proven freshness, (almost) without annoying age complaints. At least that’s how it looks in the youngest – or should I say the oldest? – Indiana Jones film opening in theaters next week. The eponymous hero embarks on thrilling adventures, hops over rooftops, knocks out villains – or gives them fast-paced chases. As always, “Indy” is embodied by Harrison Ford. The fact that Ford actually has eight decades under his belt apparently didn’t bother the film’s producers. And the jubilation at the Cannes premiere suggests that the audience doesn’t have a problem with it either.

why? In times of criticism of “ageism” – the discrimination of people because of their (advanced) age – that would not only be in vain, but also unseemly. Still, Ford’s maturity raises questions. First and foremost: doesn’t Hollywood have any younger stars? For all our love for the magic of cinema, which has always made our dreams of eternal youth come true: If actors who – like Ford – celebrated their breakthrough in the early 1970s are still the driving forces of the film industry 50 years later, then nothing is going well wrong with her?
