For a long time it was quiet about the building, but now it is clear: the country is responsible for the future of the ‘Alte Wacht’. However, it has not yet been clarified which area of responsibility of the country the former toll barrier falls under.

The “Alte Wacht” served as a toll barrier at the entrance to the Großarltal for centuries. After the state of Salzburg donated the property to the Hohe Tauern National Park Association in 2001, it dissolved last year. Martin Rohrmoser, founding member of the association, explains: “It is contractually stipulated that in the event of the association being dissolved, the Alte Wacht will return to the state.” After the club was dissolved in the summer of 2023, things became quiet around the historic building. In the office of the responsible state governor, Wilfried Haslauer, they emphasize: “We don’t know anything new at the moment.”

Christian Pucher, spokesman for the state governor, explained in 2023: “The fact that we should take back real estate is rare and unusual.”

But the responsible lawyer Fritz Kühleitner knows: “The ‘Alte Wacht’ is going on land, that is contractually agreed. A clerk from the State Building Directorate has been commissioned to take the next steps.”

Land provides the ‘Alte Wacht’

Thomas Meisl from the State Building Directorate is the same person in charge and explains: “Due to the dissolution of the Hohe Tauern National Park Association, the state is taking on the ‘Alte Wacht’ again. We are currently checking which department in the state the listed building will fall into. There are first ones Discussions. But one thing is certain: The ‘Old Watch’ will remain and the country will preserve the monument.”

One of the possible departments that the “Alte Wacht” could take care of is the department for folk culture, cultural heritage and museums and thus also the open-air museum. In the absence of director Michael Weese, the builder of the open-air museum, Christian Unterberger, explained: “We have only recently known about the possibility and I and other employees have not yet been told anything concrete about it.”
