The United Auto Workers union said it extended its strike in Detroit against General Motors and Stellantis, the parent company of Chrysler, but kept its strike against Ford limited to one plant due to progress made in the talks.
The United Auto Workers union began a strike yesterday afternoon, Friday, local time (1600 GMT) at 38 spare parts distribution centers across the United States for General Motors and Stellantis, extending unprecedented simultaneous strikes that began at one assembly plant for each of the three companies in Detroit.
5,600 workers in additional facilities joined the 12,700 already striking workers.
Union President Sean Fine said that by targeting distribution centers, the strike has become a nationwide event, during a live broadcast on Facebook that was watched by more than 50,000 on the platform and nearly 10,000 on YouTube.
GM said in a statement that union leaders were “manipulating the negotiation process for their own personal agenda,” and described the escalation of the strike as “unnecessary.”
Stellantis stated that it continues to meet with the union.
Ford said it was continuing to negotiate, adding, “We have more work to do before we can reach an agreement.”
The crisis raises fears of a long strike that could disrupt production, affect the supply chain, and harm American economic growth. A Archyde.com/Ipsos poll yesterday, Thursday, showed great support from Americans for the striking auto workers.
The three companies proposed a 20% increase in wages over four and a half years, while the union is demanding a 40% increase.
The union is also demanding the abolition of the tiered wage structure, which it says has created a huge gap between new and old employees.
