Parliament

Parliament has approved an international treaty with the UAE with a two-thirds majority of the governing parties. The subject is the development of the Rákos marshalling yard, where an entire district in the style of a “mini Dubai” is to be created.

Deputy Prime Minister Zsolt Semjén from the coalition partner KDNP introduced the bill at the end of March. This creates the framework conditions for Arab investors to invest around 5 billion euros in the construction of luxury properties. The Orbán government is now committed to infrastructure services worth 300 billion forints (770 million euros).

Treason!?

The leader of the left-wing splinter party Párbeszéd, Bence Tordai, accused the 134 “courageous” MPs from the ruling Fidesz-KDNP party of treason. This luxury project would once again only line the pockets of billionaires and the Hungarian would become a second-class citizen in his own country.

Consultation brings 95%

Mayor Gergely Karácsony referred to a survey conducted by the town hall among Budapest residents, which produced clear results. Among 25,000 participants, 95% want an open call for tenders for the project, 94% want a park city instead of a mini Dubai, and 92% want to preserve the world cultural heritage in the area around Heroes’ Square. The city leadership feels confirmed to resist the gigantic project. The opposition politician recalled the actions of the people of Budapest against the Chinese Fudan University, which ultimately forced Fidesz to withdraw.

Budapest wants a say

The alternative candidate for mayor, Dávid Vitézy, also stated that if elected, he would work to ensure that Budapest residents regain a say in urban development. “Here the capital’s gold reserves are being squandered on Arab investors,” he complained. The investor receives 130 hectares of land from the state without having to meet any requirements.
