Temporary defeat is in Russia’s interest
LONDON – Yevgeny Prigozhin, “Putin’s cook”, founder of the Russian private military company Wagner Group, published an essay on April 14, arguing that the Ukrainian counteroffensive is more likely to succeed than to fail. . In it, he denies talks of a ceasefire, arguing that if Russia is temporarily defeated, the people can unite to defeat Ukraine, and calls for a steadfast continuation of the war.
Prigogine said in an essay:
“Russia cannot collapse by military means. Forests, swamps, vast territories and climatic peculiarities ensure that the country is protected and turned into a huge fortress. Historically, no enemy has reached Moscow. As a result, it is the norm of history to flee in disgrace and return from the ‘victory path’ to the ‘death path’.”
According to the bizarre-sounding essay, the Russian military’s failure to emerge victorious in a short period of time threw the “Deep State”, an elite community with its own agendas separate from the Russian political leadership, into chaos. Prigozhin accused the bureaucratic ruling “deep state” of preventing victory in the war in Ukraine simply because they wanted to regain their privileged comforts.
But the “Deep State” is a figment of Prigogine’s imagination and does not actually exist. The Kremlin was ruled by the nationalist “siloviki” of the military, the Ministry of Defense, and the intelligence service, with Putin at the top. It may be, but it was once again firmly incorporated into the system with the transition to a wartime economy.
