NWe discovered with amazement and anger the brutal and unjustified measure which has just struck the New Generation Theater (TNG)-National Dramatic Center of Lyon: the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes Regional Council has, in fact, decided to purely and simply abolish the subsidy he allocated to the theatre.
This measure, announced on April 28, jeopardizes not only the achievement of its public service missions towards the inhabitants of the region, but also the artistic, administrative and technical jobs that make the action of the TNG possible. .
The argument invoked to justify this deeply destructive decision is that the director of the TNG, Joris Mathieu, refuses to discuss with the regional executive. This is obviously a staggering untruth, when we know that the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region has unilaterally severed all exchanges with the cultural sector and its representatives since the sudden cuts in subsidies in May 2022.
What is actually reproached to Joris Mathieu is to have, within the framework of his functions as elected to the office of the Syndicate of artistic and cultural enterprises (Syndeac), taken a firm position against the cultural policy carried out by the region. Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes for a year.
The punitive measure that strikes the TNG is a measure of intimidation, which attacks the freedom of expression of a union representative. This attack constitutes a dangerous precedent: it is a serious violation of the basic rules of social dialogue, and a clear breach of our republican pact.
False justification
Joris Mathieu contented himself with recalling the deleterious methods of the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes regional council in cultural matters: total absence of consultation and refusal of any dialogue, arbitrary, brutal and unjustified budget cuts, attacks against places of creation, false justification a territorial rebalancing, even though the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region invests less in culture than most regions of France.
The regional council has the right to find its indictment severe, it can try to bring him the denials that it deems fit. On the other hand, he is seriously dishonoring himself by practicing retaliation as he has just done. Worse: it comes to corroborate in a brilliant way all that Joris Mathieu had precisely tried to denounce.
The attack on the TNG should not be the tree that hides the forest. Many places of culture and art have been victims, in 2022, of the region’s brutal measures, through drastic and arbitrary budget cuts. Others will be hit in 2023, which will further weaken the cultural and artistic environment of Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes.
