The Banque de France asks agencies to refuse fewer refunds

Bank account fraud is on the rise. Often victims are called by someone posing as a bank advisor warning them of a fraudulent transaction. Giving the codes to, they think, block the illegal payment, they validate on the contrary a transfer to the account of the crooks. In this case, the banks refuse to reimburse the sum, highlighting the customer’s negligence, explains TF1 Info. The Banque de France takes a dim view of this response

The double authentication supposed to protect

The banking establishments believe that the transfer has indeed been validated by the victim by means of double authentication, a procedure precisely put in place to fight against scams. In three cases of fraud out of ten, by applying this rule, the banks dispense with reimbursing the amount that has evaporated. However, the Banque de France now wishes to promote the reimbursement of sums lost in these circumstances.

The institution asks the banks “not to stop at the single criterion of strong authentication to refuse reimbursement, but to take into account a greater number of criteria”, specified Pierre Bienvenu, deputy head of the oversight of the Banque de France’s cashless means of payment.

Institutions were sensitive to this argument. They promised to speed up the refund by not going beyond 24 hours after the dispute was filed. However, it is better to remain vigilant because the scammers are not going to stop anytime soon. “The advice is to check against the usual message received by the bank. If it is different, it is necessarily a hacking. Do not believe the messages that call you to click or call a number,” recommends cybersecurity expert Laura Peytavin.
