The University of Miami’s Bascom Palmer Eye Institute once again ranked first in the country for ophthalmology in the most recent US News & World Report rankings, continuing its two-decade reign as the best hospital for eye care.

“Our clinical scientists and researchers are tackling some of ophthalmology’s toughest challenges while delivering better eye care to patients in South Florida and around the world,” Dr. Eduardo said in a statement. This is the 20th consecutive year that Bascom Palmer has been ranked No. 1 in the nation in ophthalmology.

Baptist Health South Florida also ranked highly, with its Baptist Hospital in Kendall earning the No. 1 spot for best hospital in the Miami-Fort Lauderdale metropolitan area and securing a spot among the top five hospitals in Florida.

“Achieving this recognition is a direct result of the exceptional work and dedication of our employees and medical staff across the organization,” Baptist Health South Florida CEO Bo Boulenger said in an emailed statement.

Nicklaus Children’s Hospital, near South Miami, ranked No. 2 in Florida for pediatric hospitals. And for the first time since opening in 2020, the Christine E. Lynn Rehabilitation Center at The Miami Project to Cure Paralysis at ek UHealth/Jackson Memorial made the “Best Hospitals for Rehabilitation” list.

US News evaluated 1,041 hospitals across the country for their care of rehab patients, with 50 hospitals ranked nationally. Lynn Rehabilitation was ranked No. 45. Hollywood Memorial Regional Hospital and Sarasota Memorial Hospital ranked 24 and 31, respectively, for rehabilitation services (the lower the rank, the better).

“When we built the Lynn Rehabilitation Center, our vision was for it to become one of the finest physical rehabilitation hospitals in the country, where patients who have suffered from accidents or life-changing illnesses could learn to regain strength, mobility and functionality,” said Carlos A. Migoya, Jackson’s general manager, in a statement. “…Our success is reflected in all the patients who have been able to return to their daily lives with a renewed sense of hope and independence.”

The classification of health centers

This year, US News compared more than 4,500 hospitals across 15 specialties and 21 procedures and conditions, and only 12% of the hospitals tested earned a “Best Hospitals” rating. Other rankings included “Best Regional Hospitals”, “High Performance” and “Honor Roll”.

The 5 Best Hospitals in Florida

US News evaluated 254 hospitals in Florida and 24 met its rating standards. Here are the top 5:

▪ Mayo Clinic Jacksonville is the best hospital in Florida. He was classified nationally in nine specialties and classified as High Performance in 18 procedures/conditions. Mayo has held the top spot for seven of the past eight years.

▪ AdventHealth Orlando tied with UF Health Shands Hospital in Gainesville for No. 2 in Florida. AdventHealth was ranked nationally in four specialties, one pediatric specialty, and was ranked top performer in six specialties and 15 procedures/conditions. UF Shands is nationally ranked in five adult specialties, four pediatric specialties, and ranked top performer in four specialties and 17 procedures/conditions.

▪ Tampa General Hospital was ranked No. 4 on the list (there is no No. 3 on the list).

▪ Baptist Health Baptist Hospital in Miami-Dade County tied with Sarasota Memorial Hospital to complete the Top 5 in Florida. Baptist ranked nationally in one specialty – neurology and neurosurgery – and ranked high in five specialties: cancer, gastroenterology and GI surgery, geriatrics, orthopedics, pulmonology and pulmonary surgery, and 12 procedures/conditions. Sarasota was ranked nationally in two specialties and top performing in five specialties and 13 procedures and conditions.

The 5 Best Hospitals in Miami and Fort Lauderdale

▪ Baptist Health Baptist Hospital in Kendall was ranked No. 1, which included Baptist Children’s Hospital. Other Baptist hospitals were also recognized as top performers in various conditions and procedures, including diabetes, kidney failure, stroke, pneumonia, knee replacement, heart failure and geriatrics.

▪ Cleveland Clinic Weston was ranked 2nd in the area and 7th in the state. He was nationally ranked in one specialty, Gastroenterology and Gastrointestinal Surgery, and achieved high performance in three specialties—Geriatrics, Neurology and Neurosurgery, Pulmonology, and Pulmonary Surgery—and 12 procedures/conditions.

▪ University of Miami Hospital and Clinics – UHealth Tower was ranked No. 3 in Miami-Fort Lauderdale and No. 9 in Florida. He was ranked nationally in two specialties – neurology and neurosurgery, ophthalmology – and achieved high performance in three specialties – cancer, diabetes and endocrinology, geriatrics – and 10 procedures/conditions.

▪ Mount Sinai Medical Center in Miami Beach was ranked No. 4 in Miami-Fort Lauderdale, No. 10 in Florida, securing a high performance rating in three specialties – geriatrics, orthopedics, urology – and 11 procedures/ ailments.

▪ Memorial Hospital West in Pembroke Pines, part of Memorial Healthcare and one of Broward County’s public hospitals, rounded out the Top 5 in the Miami-Fort Lauderdale metropolitan area, and ranked No. 14 in the state. He obtained a high performance in nine procedures/conditions.

What about the other public hospitals in South Florida?

▪ Jackson Health System, Miami-Dade’s public hospital network, was ranked nationally in one adult specialty (rehabilitation), one pediatric specialty (pediatric diabetes and endocrinology), and achieved high performance in three adult procedures and conditions .

▪ Memorial Regional Hospital in Hollywood ranked No. 6 in the Miami-Fort Lauderdale metropolitan area. The hospital was ranked nationally in one adult specialty—rehabilitation—and ranked top performer in seven procedures/conditions. Nationally ranked in a children’s specialty, Pediatric Orthopedics; Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital was part of the evaluation.

▪ Broward Health Medical Center in Fort Lauderdale, one of Broward’s public hospital systems, ranked top performers for three procedures/conditions. Broward Health Coral Springs and Broward Health North were ranked top performers in three adult procedures/conditions.

How were children’s hospitals in Florida ranked?

▪ Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital in Saint Petersburg ranked No. 1 in Florida and first nationally in seven pediatric specialties.

▪ Nicklaus Children’s Hospital was ranked No. 2 in Florida and is ranked nationally in five pediatric specialties: Neonatology, Pediatric Cardiology and Cardiac Surgery, Pediatric Neurology and Neurosurgery, Pediatric Orthopedics and Pediatric Pulmonology, and Pulmonary Surgery.

▪ Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children in Orlando tied with UF Health Shands Children’s Hospital in Gainesville for No. 3. Both hospitals ranked nationally in four children’s specialties.

▪ Nemours Children’s Hospital in Orlando tied Wolfson Children’s Hospital in Jacksonville for No. 5 in Florida. There is no No. 4.

▪ Holtz Children’s Hospital in Miami, part of a partnership between Jackson Health System and UHealth, tied with Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital in Hollywood and AdventHealth for Children in Orlando for No. 7 in the state (no No. 6). Holtz Children is nationally ranked in pediatric diabetes and endocrinology, Joe DiMaggio is nationally ranked in pediatric orthopedics, and AdventHealth is nationally ranked in neonatology.
