The beginning of the Year of Lighthouses is announced in Neringa

The decision to declare 2024 as the Year of Lighthouses was made by the Neringa Municipality Council, joining the Klaipėda City Municipality.

The initiative was motivated by two anniversaries that will be celebrated next year: 150 years, when the first lighthouse was lit in Nida, and 140 years, when the White Lighthouse on the northern pier of Klaipėda lit up for the first time.

“We will strive to talk about Neringa’s lighthouses and maritime heritage as much as possible throughout this year. That every guest of Neringa must include all three lighthouses in their itinerary – Nida, Juodkrantė and Pervalka,” says Neringa Mayor Darius Jasaitis.

On Saturday, the opening ceremony of the Lighthouse Year will be held in Neringa, starting at the Nida lighthouse building complex. During the theatrical event, thanks will also be expressed to all those who contributed to the survival of the Nida lighthouse building complex in the hands of the public and its adaptation to museum activities.

With the approval of the Government of Lithuania, the National Art Museum of Lithuania transferred the complex of Nida lighthouse structures to the Neringa museums, which are already taking care of their arrangement and adaptation to their activities, according to the use agreement. During the event, it will be possible to view this complex of buildings.

The theatrical event of the opening of the Year of Lighthouses will be followed by a procession towards the rest house “Medikas”, it will take place to express concern about the state’s intentions to sell this building complex, together with the historic dune keeper’s house. Support for the Ukrainian community living here will also be expressed.

Afterwards, a night procession is planned towards the Nida lighthouse, which will shine with the historical light of crystal Fresnel lenses.

The Nida lighthouse will also shine with its pendulum beam on March 11. On these days, the path leading to the Nida lighthouse will also be festively illuminated. The Nida Lighthouse will be open to the public throughout the long weekend, only with different opening hours.

The initiatives dedicated to the Year of Lighthouses will accompany the whole of 2024, there will be more than half a dozen events and initiatives aimed at getting to know the lighthouses of Nida, Juodkrantė and Pervalka. Exhibitions, book presentations, educations, excursions, concerts will take place throughout the year. Residents and guests of the resort will be invited to familiarize themselves with the tourist routes.

During the summer months, a cultural-educational cruise on the “Kuršis” steamboat will be organized. During this trip, it will be told about the relationship of the fishermen of the Curonian Spit with the old Nida lighthouse and what role this navigational object played in their daily life. The 130th anniversary of the Werner lookout on the Bloksberg dune, where the Juodkrantė lighthouse stands today, will also be commemorated.

According to the mayor, it is intended to resume the search for the foundations of the old Nida lighthouse. It is intended to exhibit a human-sized model of the old lighthouse of Nida at the determined site of the foundation.
