The Belliard tunnel remains closed

This Tuesday followingnoon, shortly following 5:30 p.m., an accident caused a fire in the Belliard tunnel. The vehicle in question entered the Belliard tunnel and burst into flames, for an unknown reason. Quickly the smoke spread in all the tunnels that follow. The Belliard tunnel was evacuated via the emergency exits and all cars were directed out of the tunnels.

Afterwards, the emergency services had to close all the structures: the Belliard, Cinquantenaire, Loi and Reyers-centre tunnels are closed to all traffic until further notice. The fire was quickly brought under control around 6:00 p.m. but the firefighters had to carry out the complete ventilation of these very busy underground passages at rush hour.

7:30 p.m. : Queues still appear near rue Belliard but also on the E40 motorway from Kraainem. Checks should be made to determine if the tunnel has been damaged.

19H45: Brussels Mobility confirms that 3 tunnels are reopened. The Belliard tunnel remains closed.
