BEIJING, Oct. 20 (Xinhua) — The Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) has become a strong link connecting different countries around the world, as leaders of partner countries gathered in Beijing reaffirm their shared commitment to cooperation, Thai Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin said on Thursday.

“Each country has its own plans to propose and discuss at the forum, with the aim of moving forward in cooperation with the BRI,” the Thai prime minister said in an interview with Xinhua in Beijing, where he attended the 3rd Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation and paid an official visit to China.

“The BRI is an important initiative that benefits humanity as a whole by strengthening infrastructure construction, trade and investment, cultural and people-to-people exchanges,” he said, observing that the BRI Chinese President Xi Jinping’s speech at the opening ceremony of the forum sent a clear signal that China adheres to peaceful development and opening-up.

During this visit, Srettha Thavisin also met with several Chinese business leaders to attract investments to Thailand. “I am here to send the message that Thailand is ready to welcome investors from China,” he said.

The Thai government looks forward to strengthening cooperation with China in the electric vehicle sector, as many automobile manufacturers have invested in the country, which plays an important role in pushing forward Thailand’s industrialization, said the Thai government. There is also another promising sector of cooperation between the two countries in agriculture, he said. Srettha Thavisin wants to export more quality durians to China. “I know Chinese people like to eat durian,” he said.

The visit to China is Srettha Thavisin’s first official visit to a country outside the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), soon after she took office as Thailand’s new prime minister.

Friendly relations between Thailand and China have a long history, and people of the two countries support each other as members of the same family, he said.

With a favorable economic environment, Thailand hopes to participate in more BRI projects by collaborating with Chinese companies, maintain dynamic trade exchanges, and further promote the development of bilateral relations, said the Prime Minister Thai. END
