Silver medalist of the Olympics in Turin in the relay Pavel Rostovtsev January 11 was appointed Vice President of the Russian Biathlon Union (RBU). The day before reportedthat Rostovtsev will be the head coach of the national team.

Rostovtsev from September 2019 to December 2021 was the Minister of Sports of the Krasnoyarsk Territory. From 2011 to 2014, he worked as a shooting coach for the Russian women’s team together with the German specialist Wolfgang Pichler.

Later, sports commentator Dmitry Guberniev said that the appointment of Rostovtsev as vice president of the RBU with the functionality of the head coach of the national team is an attempt to collapse the Russian biathlon.

“This is called a good face on a bad game, an attempt to deceive the state represented by the Ministry of Sports and the CSP (Centre for Sports Training of Russian National Teams) by the SBR failed. Once again, I emphasize that this was an attempt at deception. How can the vice-president of the RBU for sports be with the powers of the head coach of the Russian national team? This is a substitution of concepts and absolute legal illiteracy. All this is still running in bags ahead of the locomotive and an attempt to ruin the Russian biathlon, ” said Guberniev “Match TV”.

Pavel Rostovtsev declined to comment on Guberniev’s statement.

What do they say about Guberniev’s statement?

Anfisa Reztsova, 1988 Olympic champion in biathlon

“It’s better not to say anything about Guberniev at all. He is not a biathlete. I have great respect for Elena Vyalbe, she once told him: “Young man, you were rowing, rowing from skiing.” When Dmitry speaks out, these are not always correct statements, and when he now says that the choice for the position is incorrect, I remind you that he is not a biathlete. If the biathlon federation decided so, then apparently Viktor Viktorovich needs help so that biathlon does not die here, but on the contrary, they work with him, work with children, sports schools and regions, and Guberniev is absolutely wrong, let him hold his opinion for the future, ” – Reztsova told RBC Sport.

Anatoly Khovantsev, former coach of the Russian national biathlon team

“The Ministry of Transport and the SBR should determine the legitimacy of the appointment and all those other points that must follow the appointment. According to Rostovtsev, this is a difficult moment, because from his public speeches I do not quite understand his role. The head coach is the organizer, if we talk about his role in preparation, intensity planning, a person who worked for 3 years behind the back of the head coach, of course, he did not take part. Three years is not enough to evaluate the actual work of a coach. This is the decision of the federation, we need to wait how the Ministry of Sports behaves. Gubernieva sometimes goes off scale in assessing various situations, more emotions than any correct conclusions. I think it plays a big role his personal conflict, and so, in principle, the fact that he emphasizes that the appointment must meet the criteria – this is the right position, ”Khovantsev told RBC Sport.

Dmitry Vasiliev, two-time Olympic champion

“Dmitry Guberniev has every right to make statements of any kind, if he sees fit. It’s another matter that now I don’t see constructive action on the part of the Russian Biathlon Union, now it’s just some kind of fuss, squabbles, not quite the right decisions, as it seems to me. Wrong appointments have been made for a long time, starting with Shashilov (Mikhail Shashilov – former coach of the Russian women’s team – RBC.) which should not be in the team in my opinion. Well, the whole story is still going on. It certainly does not benefit the development of biathlon, these decisions on the part of the RRF bring destructiveness, ”Vasilyev told RBC Sport.

Sergey Shashilov served as the head coach of the Russian women’s team from May 2020 until the end of the 2022 Olympics. On January 13, 2022, Match TV and Sport-Express reported that the SBR at a board meeting could consider the resignation of Shashilov. According to them, the former coach was repeatedly accused of violating the regime. RBU President Viktor Maigurov denied this information, calling such reports a “blow to the Russian team” before the Olympics.

Sergei Chepikov, two-time Olympic champion

“The decision is still made by the president of the Russian Biathlon Union, there is also a board. I am not a member of these governing bodies, so it is rather difficult for me to comment on Guberniev’s statement in any way. The appointment is certainly legitimate, certain positions are provided for in the Ministry of Sports. I believe that Pavel will cope with this work. The only thing, for my many years of experience, I observed conflicts between the head coach and the senior coaches of the women’s and men’s national teams, the main thing is that this should not happen, so that the head coach takes on administrative functions to a greater extent, and does not interfere in the specific preparation of the national teams ” , – Chepikov told RBC Sport.
